Table Pop Designs

If you’ve got a party coming up and want to really woo your guests, why not go over the top with your table décor? While at the Bash Conference in Phoenix, Arizona in January, my favorite night event was the table top competition. I consider myself to be an expert stylist when it comes to setting a table. I meticulously consider my centerpieces, linens, layering materials and always adding height to vamp up the drama. But I must admit I have never seen tables as elaborate as what I witnessed at this event.

The contestants were give very little direction:

  • Use a black, white and gold color scheme
  • Theme – Hollywood Glamour

This is what they came up with:

What truly made these set ups POP was theintricate details that are hard to capture on camera. For example, the table that ultimately won the competition had stations that went around the center piece like you would see on a red carpet. Books with celebrity icons adorned the tables. Each person had a glass box on top of her plate filled with fabulous gifts as her party favor.

I say when it comes to really making a table POP, here are a few tips:

Inspiration

Find that one thing that will inspire the table. I can be a flower, pattern, piece of artwork or a plate – but once you find that “it” piece – stay true to it as you build your tabletop. Meaning – don’t be afraid to throw it in your purse as you head to Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and Joann’s!

Linens

Most of the time I would suggest this is step #2 as if you go with a solid color your accent pieces may be more elaborate. Also keep in mind that if you choose a pattern, you can let the linens determine your color pallet.

Use what you have

Once you know your color pallet – walk around your house and find pieces you can use on your table. This simple step can save you $10’s to hundreds of dollars!

Layer, layer, layer

Use chargers and 1-2 additional plates to add depth to the place setting. But don’t stop there! You can add boxes, cake stands, glassware and so much more to go up, Up, UP! Height adds dimension and interest to your table.

Centerpieces

Think of the type of dinner it is going to be. If you want intimate conversation then when you add height make sure the arrangement is on a thin pedestal so everyone can see one-another during dinner.

Lighting

Nothing brings a table to life more than candles… so light them! Simple votives will do the trick if you don’t want to go big.
